As a professional association Tri-State has long recognized the importance of sharing the knowledge and experience of its members with college students who have expressed an interest in a career in Human Resources. Tri-State has had a long standing relationship with Rowan University and its SHRM Student Chapter and recognizes the importance of providing support and assistance to the people who are the future of the profession.

The Rowan University SHRM Student Chapter is a 2010 SHRM Student Chapter Merit Award winner. It is one of over 400 SHRM student chapters with over 10,000 members nationally. Joel Rudin, Ph.D. serves as the chapter advisor. Members of the Student Chapter are invited to attend Tri-State’s monthly meeting and annual conference to network and to gain information from various program speakers on a number of Human Resource related topics.

Over the years Tri-State members have spoken to both the Student Chapter and to business management classes on a variety of HR related topics. Tri-State members and their companies have hired Rowan students as co-ops while still in school and as full time employees when they graduate.

As part of its support of the Rowan University Student Chapter, Tri-State annually provides tow $500 scholarships that students at Rowan can apply for in their senior year. The criteria to apply for the scholarship is that the student must be an active member of SHRM, be enrolled in the Human Resource Management Specialization, and have minimum of a 3.0 GPA. All applicants must also complete an essay and submit it along with a copy of a resume. A panel of Tri-State members reviews each application and judges the person’s academic record, Student Chapter leadership role, community involvement, and the quality of the essay.
